The government s efforts to reach its targets on
tackling climate change are expected to lead to a rise in
energy bills, according to a new report. Research by
professional services firm Ernst Young found that
household and commercial electricity costs may
rise by 20 per cent as Westminster attempts to cut emissions in
the UK. It is predicted that such an increase will equate to a
213 increase on the annual cost of energy. safe nuclear
However, the study also found that over 60 per cent of the
public claim they are not prepared to pay more on their bills.
Simon Harvey, who co-authored the report, said: The
average consumer does not appear to realise that this
additional cost is going to hit their wallets. There
seems to be a worrying degree of apathy among consumers to
reduce energy consumption, despite daily headlines about rising
fuel bills. clean air nuclear
Last week, the chief executive of British Gas s parent
company Centrica claimed that energy prices have to rise
at some point . Sam Laidlaw made the comment to a
committee of MPs in meeting about the increasing cost of gas

Carbon Trust announces data centre software plans
The Carbon Trust has announced plans to work on new software
designed to help businesses consider their energy consumption.
Working in partnership with the British Computer Society, the
organisation is to develop the program to help
commercial electricity users reduce the carbon
emissions of their data centres. According to the company, such
centres produce around 25 per cent of all IT-related
emissions. nuclear powered buildings
Hugh Jones, solutions director of the Carbon Trust, said

It is crucial that we make effective tools available
to enable companies to identify the right steps to take to
reduce energy use and carbon, he added. Last week, the

Government outlines plans to increase renewable energy
The government has announced new plans to increase the
amount of renewable energy produced for use by homes and
businesses in the UK. Business secretary John Hutton revealed
the measures, which include the introduction of a new financial
incentive system to encourage domestic and commercial
electricity users to generate green energy. Financial
support for those planning to install microgeneration
technology at their homes or offices has also been proposed,
with incentives coming through a feed-in tariff. nuclear energy efficient house
Discussing the new strategy, Mr Hutton said the expansion of
renewable energy is an important moment in the
UK s efforts to introduce new low carbon technologies. He
added: We must make the most rapid progress possible to
becoming a cleaner, greener economy and we will strive to make
these changes in the most effective way possible, with the
least cost to consumers. Earlier this week, the Carbon
Trust launched a new standard which will be awarded to
organisations that have made a year-on-year effort to improve

3). Avoid prices increases coming your way - crafty
tactics
The electricity market is renowned for its inflated
prices, record profits, fat
cats, lack of innovation and poor customer
care. E4B is a real alternative to the established
players. Watch out for the cleverly disguised electricity price
increase letters, often sent out up to 4 months before your
commercial electrcity contract renewal date. wind powered homes
Some utilities suppliers will impose these commercial
electricity increases on your business if you do not act -
price increases by default! Many business owners do not have
the time to work out exactly how much more they are going to be
paying for commercial electricity but increases of up
to 140% have recently been imposed. nuclear efficient homes
4). Our commitment to your business
Often businesses put up with poor service
and increasing electricity prices because of
their concerns with the hassle of changing electricity
supplier. Switching your electricity supply to E4B is easy - we
will take care of everything, letting you concentrate on
running your business. safe nuclear
E4B provides a service which cuts through the confusion in
the electricity industry and offers prices which are simple to

But profits are rising and rising big time and the
explanation given is that these profits come from a different
source -- from upstream activities such as generation and
exploration. Now this might appear plausible except that it was
they who persuaded the UK government against wide ranging
protests at the time that they should be allowed to integrate
both generation and supply businesses as they operated much
more efficiently in tandem. self powered home
They can t therefore have it both ways - either the
vertically integrated companies should report as single
entities and come clean about the overall level of profits they
are making from activities that are ultimately paid for by the
final customer or if they wish to divorce the business
activities then the government must revisit the rationale for
allowing such integrated giants in the first place. nuclear energy efficient house
If the former approach is the preferred one then the
decision to raise tariffs to such unprecedented levels was
completely unjustified and consumers have a right to new fair
rates along with compensation for overcharging. nuclear heat
Furthermore, the original argument given for raising tariffs
to these levels is itself now redundant. Wholesale prices have
seen a sustained retreat since the summer but this has failed
to halt the drive towards even greater profitability. Scottish
and Southern Energy will be raising prices on 1st January 2007
despite an advance in pre-tax profits for the first half of the
year to a staggering 84.5 million. Energy supply director,
Alistair Phillips-Davies is recently quoted as saying If,
as everyone hopes, falls in wholesale energy prices continue
and are sustained, we will move as quickly as we can to reverse
the price rises of recent years. nuclear power plant
But shouldn t they be applying these price reductions
now, or at the very least forego any further increase After
all, the profits that have been reported have been generated
from the unprecedented rise in wholesale prices -- yes, those
same wholesale price rises that necessitated the retail price
increases in the first place. Yet they, like all the other
major suppliers, seem determined to have their cake and eat it
by once again claiming that the retail business is a separate
entity from upstream generation. free electric
Graham Paul, Sales and Marketing Director of Electricity 4
Business Ltd, a company determined to redress this imbalance in
the business electricity sector, points out a further negative
impact of the government s decision to allow companies to
operate both in generation and supply. nuclear the answer
Those energy giants who operate in both generation and
supply gain a massive advantage by not having to go to the
wholesale market for their supplies. Their supplies are simply
transferred from their generating activities. solar powered homes
Those of us whose only option is to purchase from the
wholesale market discover that prices are distorted by virtue
of the energy giants absence. says Paul. The
market is too small to operate properly and is therefore
illiquid. The end result is a barrier to the very competition
that de-regulation was supposed to create. Like Energywatch we
believe there should be a competition commission investigation
into whether the market really is working. If prices fail to
come down, it will only add weight to the call for market
structure change. wind powered homes
The only feasible solution to redress this imbalance would
be to force all parties to source their supplies from the one
wholesale market which would be likely to drive down prices and
lead to a far better deal for the energy consumer. nuclear efficient homes
The European Competition Commission is currently
investigating the barriers to competition in gas and
electricity markets throughout Europe and is expected to
enforce the break up of supply companies who also own the
distribution networks. However, if the Commission is serious
about creating truly competitive markets it must eventually aim
to remove the advantages clearly evident to those suppliers
with generating activities. safe nuclear
