The government s efforts to reach its targets on
tackling climate change are expected to lead to a rise in
energy bills, according to a new report. Research by
professional services firm Ernst Young found that
household and commercial electricity costs may
rise by 20 per cent as Westminster attempts to cut emissions in
the UK. It is predicted that such an increase will equate to a
213 increase on the annual cost of energy. sun powered
However, the study also found that over 60 per cent of the
public claim they are not prepared to pay more on their bills.
Simon Harvey, who co-authored the report, said: The
average consumer does not appear to realise that this
additional cost is going to hit their wallets. There
seems to be a worrying degree of apathy among consumers to
reduce energy consumption, despite daily headlines about rising
fuel bills. self powered home
Last week, the chief executive of British Gas s parent
company Centrica claimed that energy prices have to rise
at some point . Sam Laidlaw made the comment to a
committee of MPs in meeting about the increasing cost of gas

The Carbon Trust has announced plans to work on new software
designed to help businesses consider their energy consumption.
Working in partnership with the British Computer Society, the
organisation is to develop the program to help
commercial electricity users reduce the carbon
emissions of their data centres. According to the company, such
centres produce around 25 per cent of all IT-related

It is crucial that we make effective tools available

reduce energy use and carbon, he added. Last week, the

The government has announced new plans to increase the
amount of renewable energy produced for use by homes and
businesses in the UK. Business secretary John Hutton revealed
the measures, which include the introduction of a new financial
incentive system to encourage domestic and commercial
electricity users to generate green energy. Financial
support for those planning to install microgeneration
technology at their homes or offices has also been proposed,
with incentives coming through a feed-in tariff. nuclear the answer
Discussing the new strategy, Mr Hutton said the expansion of
renewable energy is an important moment in the
UK s efforts to introduce new low carbon technologies. He
added: We must make the most rapid progress possible to
becoming a cleaner, greener economy and we will strive to make
these changes in the most effective way possible, with the
least cost to consumers. Earlier this week, the Carbon
Trust launched a new standard which will be awarded to
organisations that have made a year-on-year effort to improve
their environmental impact. solar powered homes

Energy watchdog probes S SE and Scottish Power for
market abuse
14.4.2008 Energy regulator Ofgem has launched an
investigation into whether Scottish Power and Scottish
Southern Energy have abused a dominant position in the UK power
market. The probe into the pair, who between them own the
Scottish transmission system and control most of the power
stations in Scotland, is separate from an investigation into
energy supply markets launched on February 21 which was
triggered by public outrage at rising retail fuel bills. self powered home

8.4.2008 The Energywatch figures will show npower has twice
as many complaints about mis-selling as its nearest rival. And
it also received a large number of complaints related to
problems with the introduction of a new billing system. An
npower spokesman said yesterday it was very concerned
about the claims made against its door-to-door sales team. He
apologised about the new billing system but insisted it was

Npower exposed - energy giant cheats its
customers 6.4.2008 An investigation by The Sunday
Times revealed the dirty tricks used by sales staff from
Npower. The underhand tactics included making customers sign a
form without revealing that it was a contract, exploiting
people with poor English. Pretending to be officials from the
electricity board. Lying about standing charges. Npower posted
record profits of 571m last year. It has signed up 170, 000 new
customers despite charging some of the industrys highest

The reporter had good reason to investigate. While Npower
increased its profits from 403m to 571m last year, the company
is also developing an unfortunate reputation. Npower is the

campaigns manager for Energywatch, the consumer watchdog.
Complaints about Npower mis-selling to customers have rocketed.
