Wind Powered Homes After reading Ron DeGregorio's March 17 op-ed article on measures designed to reassure the public regarding the safe storage of spent nuclear fuel at the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station, as well as a recent Press op-ed piece about the need for energy conservation by electric company customers, I have a question: Why are we still using the basic electric power generating and transmission system designed by Thomas Edison in the 1870s?

Nuclear Efficient Homes If we want to lessen the need for electric power generated by use of imported oil or decrease the danger caused by storage of spent nuclear fuel used in electric power plants, we should put more emphasis on research to generate electricity using nonpolluting renewable energy sources such as solar energy, wind-generated and geothermal power. Houses equipped with their own solar-powered electric generators, or those receiving electric power generated from wind-powered sources, would help the United States achieve energy independence. Use of alternate energy measures could provide U.S. homes and businesses with cheap and clean electric power.
However, the biggest and most controversial agreement of the coalition government has been the recent decision to phase out nuclear energy and close down all nuclear reactors over the next thirty years. This would make Germany the first country to shut down an entire sector of its industry. To compensate for the loss of energy, Germany has developed an advanced program to promote renewable and environmentally friendly energy sources. A new "law for the priority of renewable energy" intends to double the output of renewable energy sources by the year 2010. Alternative power sources currently provide 6% of Germany's energy supply. Solar and wind power as well as natural gas and geothermal power are intended to meet Germany's energy needs in the future.
Safe Nuclear While conservation of energy and safe storage of spent nuclear fuel are important short-term measures, America's long-term economic independence and national security depend on developing energy resources that are abundant, safe and free from economic manipulation and control by foreign powers.
The Sept. 13 letter to the editor, "Flip the switch on nuclear power, " stating that "solar power is inefficient" is completely wrong. Alternate sources of renewable energy are absolutely necessary and that comment does not call for use of nuclear energy. The world is still being subjected to the Chernobyl incident; Indian Point nuclear incidents continue to mount, leading to increasing local population complaints.
